Instructions.

I’m recording in the browser.

In order to record your interview using your computer and web browser, you need Adobe Flash 10 or better, and Chrome, FireFox, or Internet Explorer. Not all features work equally well across all browsers and operating systems, but we’ve tried to ensure as wide a variety of platforms as possible. You will need to have a microphone built in or attached to your computer.

To record your story, click Share Your Story and follow the directions on the page. You will be prompted to “Allow” Adobe Flash to run. If you don’t see this window, or the recorder doesn’t work properly, follow the instructions below. Note: When the recorder is working you will see a wave form and in most browsers, the microphone icon will flash.

If you’re having trouble recording your interview in your web browser, then try recording it directly on our National Day of Listening group page on SoundCloud and then submitting it using the “Select” tab on the Share Your Story page.

I’m uploading my story from my computer.

Use our upload feature if you have already recorded your interview and you have the file on your computer desktop. The file types accepted through our upload form are MP3, WAV, OGG, MP4, and M4A. The maximum file size allowed is 25MB.

To upload your interview, click Share Your Story and follow the directions on the page. Click the “Upload” tab. Make sure your file name only has letters and numbers, is a maximum of 25MB, and is a file type we can accept.

If you’re having trouble uploading your interview, then try uploading it directly to our National Day of Listening group on SoundCloud and then submitting it using the “Select” tab on the Share Your Story page.

I’m selecting a track I’ve already uploaded to SoundCloud.

If you have a SoundCloud account and you’re sharing a track you’ve already uploaded there, then click Share Your Story and follow the directions on the page. Click the tab that says “Select”, and you will see a dropdown list to select your track.

Note: You must select your track and submit it on nationaldayoflistening.org in order for it to appear on the website. Only sharing your track with the National Day of Listening group on SoundCloud will not include your track on nationaldayoflistening.org.

I’m using the SoundCloud app.

Using the SoundCloud app on iOS or Android is a great way to collect lots of stories with a minimal amount of effort. Simply use the SoundCloud app to record and upload your interviews to your SoundCloud account and visit our Share Your Story page and follow the directions to “Select” your story.

I want to upload a huge file.

Due to resource limitations we can’t accept huge files (more than 25MB) via the National Day of Listening website. We understand that due to audio quality or track length there may be a need to upload larger files, and there is a simple workaround.

You can submit an audio file of any size directly to our National Day of Listening group on SoundCloud. Then visit the Share Your Story page and follow the directions to “Select” your story.
